The Witches 2020: trailer, release date and who stars in the cast with Anne Hathaway in the film based on the Roald Dahl classic

In 1990, the children's novel The Witches by Roald Dahl was adapted for the big screen. Many who saw the movie as children claim to be haunted by the scene where Anjelica Huston, dressed in hideous prosthetics, transforms children into mice.

Now in 2020, The Witches are back with an all-star cast, just in time for Halloween.

This is everything you need to know about the remake.

What are The Witches about?

The 2020 incarnation of The Witches is based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name; There was also another adaptation of the children's novel in 1990, starring Anjelica Huston (All Hail King Julien, Transparent) that has become a Halloween cult classic.

Warner Brothers say The Witches is a "reinvention of Dahl's beloved story for a modern audience" that tells the story of an orphan boy who goes to live with his grandmother in the late 1960s.

During a hotel stay with his grandmother, the young body stumbles upon a gathering of witches who hate one thing above all: children. The boy transforms into a mouse and all of a sudden it's up to him and his grandmother to save all the children in the world from turning into mice.

Who stars in The Witches?

Jahzir Bruno (Atlanta, The Oath) played the boy who has a career with witches and turns into a mouse, but hatches a plan to defend himself, with the help of his grandmother, played by Octavia Spencer (Truth Being Told, Hidden Figures ).

Anne Hathaway (Ocean's Eight, Les Miserables) plays the Grand Witch, who plans to kill the children who are staying at the hotel.

Stanley Tucci (Central Park, BoJack Horseman) plays the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer.

Also included in the cast:

- Chris Rock (Fargo, Louie)

- Charles Edwards (The Crown, The Terror)

- Morgana Robinson (The Windsors, Psychobitches)

- Eugenia Caruso (5th Avenue, The Angel of Darkness)

- Simon Manyonda (His Dark Materials, The Bay)

- Zeke Taylor (American Horror Story, Merman Academy)

- Eurydice El-Etr (Inhuman Resources, Inspector Montalbano)

- Anna Devlin (The Nevers, Body of Water)

Robert Zemeckis, known for directing other projects such as The Polar Express (2004), Forrest Gump (1994), and Back to the Future (1985), directs the incarnation of history in 2020.

The script was written by Zemeckis, Kenya Barris (Black-ish, Mixed-ish), and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth).

Is there a trailer?

Warner Bros Pictures released a trailer for The Witches on October 2, sparking excitement on social media for the new film.

The trailer shows a group of witches arriving at a hotel, and the manager tells Anne Hathaway's Grand Witch that if the hotel had mice, they would be exterminated.

Revealing a potion in front of the other witches, Hathaway declares, "One drop will transform a child into a mouse."

As more and more children transform into mice, the hotel is invaded and chaos ensues.

When will The Witches be released?

Given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the film's release date is a bit up in the air.

For US audiences, the film will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on Thursday, October 22, 2020; however, the UK public will have to wait a bit longer.

Since HBO Max isn't available in the UK, The Witches are reportedly going ahead with a theatrical release here, but it's unclear when that will happen.
